  PS2 mod chips are now legal in Australia. The highest Australian court decided in Stevens v. Sony to overturn a lower court ruling that PS2 mod chips were 'technological protection measures' which would run afoul of the Australian DMCA-equivalent. Because they do not protect copyrights per se, but are rather region coding devices, they were ruled to be regional coding devices. In another case (Sony vs Connectix) Sony took its copyright violation case against PlayStation emulator developer Connectix to the US Supreme Court , but found that body would not back its demand that Connectix's Virtual Game Station be banned.
  
  I'm not too sure if it is legal in South Africa, maybe someone with experience can give me insight?
  
  BTW, Buying or making copies of original games is piracy ;)

  I had a PS2 (had to sell it for pc upgardes)! Had it chipped the soon after i got it for -+R1000.00 (chip: Matrix Inifinity) with a 1month console gaurantee and a 2year chip gaurantee ... No Complaints!
  
  All PS2s will eventually "die out" though... The lens only has 3500hours of mean time before it 'bites the big-one' ... so chip or no-chip, you play long enough and your ps2 will give in. This kind of failure is usually (probably never) covered by the people who chip the ps2s and once your ps2 is chipped you cant get the lense repaired under ps2 warranty... Probably looking at between R500 and R1000 for lens replacements these days.
  
  BTW, backing up your own originals is perfectly legal !tooth

  We've gone through 3 PS2's.
  Basically with the first one the lens did die out, but they sent us a second hand one as a replacment (*which eventually also died out*) but then we got one of the newer silver models (*not slimline though*) and it's been keeping us busy since ooooh I'd say about February 2004.
  
  So as far as I can tell (*which is also based on the stories told by many gamers around the world*) you need to get certain models of the PS2 which have the "good" lenses in them.
  
  My buddy got his slimline chipped about a year ago, it's pretty cool, you can now do all kindsa stuff like video Cd's with it and play old emulated 8 bit games and stuff.

  Boggle you can play 8 and 16 bit games on the normal PS2 aswell... with my MatrixChip i had support to start up MegaDrive, NES, SNES, GameBoy & GameBoyAdvance ROMS... Played the holy *** out of Sonic (oldschool) on my PS2 !scuba
  
  Personally i dont like the SlimLine... My first PS2 was a slimline, and in my opinion id doesnt really have ample heatsinks or fans to cope with *exteneded* usage... i burnt mine out in 2weeks flat... Went and exchanged it for a standard (Better in my opinion) version!
