I will post some info on my ubuntu issues but what is your favourite distro's? and does the live cd that comes with ubuntu work for you guys?
I prefer Mandriva although I have a variety of distro's right here in my office !tooth ( Slackware, Fedora and a old Mandrake box ). I can't give any opinion on the LiveCD. I don't have a copy of the distro yet. I wanted to see if it was worth the trouble of copying and installing first.
In order to view NTFS partitions in Linux you have to make sure that the NTFS support is installed as a kernel module or compiled directly into your kernel.
As for the dual-view, check nVidia's sie for the latest Linux drivers. As far as I understand, it's just a matter of a few settings to get it working. Don't ask me where. I've never actually tried. If you look around on LUG's, I'm sure you'll come across someone that has already asked this. Or you could join the LUG and ask.
P.S. Welcome to the world of endless possibilities
lol! thanks! have dug out an old 4.3Gb western digital which i'll install onto. So i just need install ntfs support in the installation ???
Depending on what installer Ubuntu, you should be able to select NTFS support package from a list or something to that effect. It will then install it as a module.
great stuff!! will do that! gna try the install tonight... might try that knoppix distro that was on the pcformat dvd a while ago too...
If you get a chance, you should consider trying Mandriva (formerly known as Mandrake). Mandriva is an excellent distro to get started on. They have a lot of utilities for beginners, that aren't familiar with linux, to help them setup and manage their installation. Even if you're an expert, in my opinion, Mandriva is the best.
If you want to go hardcore, you can always go the Gentoo route. Gentoo allows you to compile all the apps you want to install so that it is optimised for your machine, instead of installing pre-compiled apps. It is a bit of a lengthy process but it's worth it in the end.
